INVESTMENT CLUBS - GETTING STARTED: Government Forms to Start a Club in Michigan

Overview

There are two pieces of government paper work you must complete to start an investment club in Michigan: You must 1) file a Assumed Name/Certificate of Co-Partnership with the county your investment club will be located and 2) get a Federal Employee Identification Number from the IRS.

  1. File a Certificate of Co-Partnership with your county. The cost is minimal (usually $10).
    Wayne County
    Oakland County
    Macomb County
    Livingston County
    Washtenaw County
    Monroe County
  2. Once you receive your validated certificate of co-partnership from your county clerk, the next step is to file for a Federal Employer Identification Number (form SS-4). A Federal Employer Identification Number (form SS-4) is issued to most businesses and investment clubs.

For federal forms and tax information, visit your local IRS office or call 1-800-829-3676. Or you can download the IRS Application for Employer Identification Number (form SS-4) and Instructions using the web links below:
