  • Course #101 - How to Start, Run, and Troubleshoot an Investment Club.

    NO FEE - But registration is required.
    Learn the basics of starting and operating an investment club including partnership agreements, filing with the IRS, choosing officers, recruiting members and running an efficient, educational meeting. Our directors will visit with your group and help you get organized and started as a BetterInvesting club on the road to financial success.

  • Course #102 - Introduction to Investment Basics.

    FEE: $30 if pre-registered, $35 at the door. No Prerequisite.
    This beginner level class describes the NAIC investment principles and how they contribute to investment success. You learn basic financial terms, how to perform basic calculations needed for stock analysis, where to find research information, what data is important in Value Line, and where it is located. Through the NAIC Stock Check List, you discover what to look for in a stock to purchase. This class includes a complete tutorial on the Stock Check List. You also learn how to use stock screening to find stocks to study in an industry. This class is a prerequisite for the 10-Hour SSG Class (201).

  • Course #120 - Mutual Fund Analysis.

    FEE: $30 pre-registered, $35 at the door.
    This course will cover how to read a Morningstar Mutual Fund page and fill in the NAIC Equity and Income Mutual Fund analysis sheet. No Prerequisites.

  • Course #201 - 10 Hour Stock Selection Guide.

    FEE: $45 pre-registered, $55 at the door.
    Prerequisite: Course 102 Intro to Investment Basics
    This is a beginner level class, covering the basics of the NAIC Stock Selection Guide (SSG). The class begins with a brief review of the NAIC principles, key financial concepts and Value Line data, as you should have mastered this material in the prerequisite Class 102, Introduction to Investment Basics. You learn what to look for in a stock to purchase and how the SSG helps you identify potential investments. The tutorial on the SSG uses one pharmaceutical company to demonstrate how to fill out each section of the SSG, and how to perform the calculations used in each section. Students complete SSGs for two additional companies as homework. You also learn how to apply your own judgment to each section of the SSG to reflect your view of the company's future performance.

  • Course #202 - How to Apply Judgement to the SSG

    FEE: $30 pre-registered, $35 at the door.
    Prerequisites: Course #102: Intro to Investing or similar experience, Course #201: 10-Hour SSG class or Course #301 Beginning Toolkit.
    Topics include judgment in each SSG section with numerous examples, advanced judgment for estimating sales and EPS growth rates including how to use the preferred procedure, sustainable growth and finding trends in the PERT graph, guidelines for picking high and low P/E ratios, forecast high and low EPS, and future low price. For advanced students, this course does not dwell on how to perform calculations.

  • Course #203 - How to Use Portfolio Management Wisdom

    FEE: $35 pre-registered, $45 at the door.
    Prerequisites: Course #102: Intro to Investing or similar experience, Course #201: 10-Hour SSG class or Course #301Beginning Toolkit.
    Topics include studying industries, making informed buy and sell decisions, and overall portfolio management. The industry study process includes screening, weeding out with ratio analysis, updating stock studies for the remaining prospects,comparing the results with the Stock Comparison Guide, using Portfolio Management Guide and PERT for selecting the best stock for a portfolio based on its growth prospects, diversification and risk, and adding an over-priced company to a watch list. The course discusses why or why not to sell, and when, how to avoid common mistakes in selling, sell signals, using PERT and judgment to choose what to sell, and using the Challenge Tree to decide what to buy with the proceeds.

  • Course #301 - Beginning Toolkit 5.

    FEE: $50 pre-registered, $60 at the door. Prerequisite: Course #201 or knowledge and experience with SSG's.
    Topics include the basics of data entry, using the Investor's Toolkit software to prepare SSGs, and what to look for in a stock to purchase and how the SSG helps you identify potential investments.

  • Course #302 - Advanced Toolkit 5.

    FEE: $50 pre-registered, $60 at the door
    Prerequisites: #201 (10Hour SSG) and #301 (Beginning Toolkit) or equivalent experience with Toolkit.
    Topics include how to retrieve and update stock prices, quarterly sales, earnings, pre-tax profit and provision for tax data from the Internet for the companies in your portfolio; use PERT (Portfolio Evaluation and Review Technique) to maintain a healthy portfolio; use the Stock Comparison Guide; setup multiple portfolios, import and export SSGs, use the Preferred Procedure, and use the Stock Challenger.

  • Course #306 - Personal Record Keeper.

    FEE: $35 if pre-registered, $45 at the door.
    An Overview of the software program Personal Record Keeper that tracks all necessary record keeping for a personal portfolio.

  • Course #309 - Model Club Workshop.

    Fee: $10 pre-registered or $15 at the door.
    The Rocky Mountain Chapter Model Club Workshop meets nine times a year on the second Thursday of the month (no meetings over the summer). The goal of the workshop is to increase its participants experience and knowledge of studying industries, stocks, mutual funds, building a Model Portfolio using Prospector, monitoring the portfolio using PERT, and investing in general. Chapter directors team up with participants to study stocks and prepare educational topics. Participants are actively involved in the workshop, unlike a conventional class where lecturing is emphasized. Participants who accept and deliver assignments receive a voucher to attend a future session at no charge. Regular features of the workshop include:

    • picking companies within a sector or industry to study using Prospector,
    • creating and analyzing SSGs on several companies within that industry,
    • discussing judgment on the SSGs,
    • analyzing a Stock Comparison Guide for the companies,
    • choosing stocks and mutual funds to add to the Model Portfolio,
    • reporting status on stocks in the Model Portfolio or added to the club watch list,
    • reviewing the portfolio and making portfolio management decisions using PERT,
    • occasional presentations on other educational topics such as reading annual reports or ratio analysis, and
    • giving workshop participants practice in presenting stocks before the group.

  • Course #402 - Club Accounting - Computerized.

    FEE: $50 pre-registered, $60 at the door
    Topics include how to record member contributions, security transactions including stock purchases, stock splits, cash distributions, reinvested dividends, member withdrawals, year-end distribution, discussion of the various reports and more, using the Club Accounting software package.

  • Course #403 - Year End Close Out of Club Books.

    FEE: $50 if pre-registered, $60 at the door.
    Absolute must for all club treasurers. Topics include how to close club books, distribution of earnings statement, change in worth of valuation unit, and how to complete the federal and state partnership tax returns.

  • Course #404 - Auditing Club Books.

    FEE: $20 if pre-registered, $25 at the door. - Learn what to look at when evaluating your club books annually. Should be attended by the club treasurer and a 2-3 person audit committee from each club.
