Request a Class On-Or-Off the Road



The Alaska Chapter is taking our classes On-Or-Off The Road system.  If you have a group of 8 or more people any of our "standard" classes may be taught at your location.  We will attempt to fill all requests, as long as we have sufficient resources and instructors available to teach the classes.

  • The cost is 8$/person for a 1-hour class, $15/person for a 2-hour class, $25/person for a 4-hour class, and $35/person for a 6- hour class, with a 6-person minimum.  Checks are payable to Alaska Chapter BetterInvesting.
  • Refunds will be issued if the class is cancelled at least 7 days prior to the scheduled date.
  • No refunds will be issued if you cancel the class within 7 days of the scheduled date.

How to Request a Class:

  • Initiate a request by sending an email to our Education Committee Chair, Anne Grosshans anneg@gci.net. Please use "NAIC Class" as the subject of your email. You may also send mail to Alaska Chapter NAIC, P.O. Box 221515, Anchorage, AK 99522-1515.
  • The initial request must be made at least 1 month in advance.
  • In your request please include preferred date(s), the class you would like taught, location, and approximately how many people you anticipate taking the class.
  • Your group or club will make all the arrangements for a facility. The meeting room must be able to accommodate a projection system, with either a screen or blank wall suitable to project onto available. 
  • You must contact Anne Grosshans 1 week prior to the class and let us know how many students you will have,  the location, and any logistical information.

Classes Available

Starting and Running an Investment Club.   How to create an investment club partnership,  run meetings, create educational program, maintain the interest and participation of members. (2 hours)

 Stock Selection Guide.   Using the Toolkit software learn the concepts behind the Stock Selection Guide and how to enter data and interpret it.  (various lengths from 4 to 10 hours)

 When to Sell a Stock.   We will discuss reasons why you might want to sell a stock, industry factors, use of the PMG and PERT, insiders and institutions, and a list of "don'ts" on selling. (2 hours)

Red Flags on the SSG.  We will go through the Stock Selection Guide and identify judgments and other items that are "Red Flags" when considering either buying a new stock or evaluating a stock that you already hold.  (2 hours)

Understanding Annual Reports.   Learn the basics of evaluating the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement. (2 hours)

Portfolio Evaluation and Review Technique for Individual Stocks.  A review of the Toolkit forms: PERT-A, PERT B and PERT -A graph.  Learn what data are needed and how to interpret the tables and graphs.  These forms are essential in evaluating stocks to buy and in regularly evaluating your existing holdings.  (2 hours)

Portfolio Evaluation and Review Technique for Your Portfolio.  Learn How PERT Can Help You Make Wise Portfolio Decisions Before the Stock Market Reacts.  Evaluate quarterly and annual data trends for stocks you own or are considering buying.  You will learn how data is collected, organized and displayed using PERT tools.  Once you've mastered the SSG, learning PERT is a must.  (2 hours)

 Club Accounting Principles.   Have a one-on-one discussion with an experienced club treasurer who has used both online and software accounting methods.  (2 hours)

How to Find Stock Information with Value Line.  Beginning investors will learn how to find and use this excellent resource for stock evaluation.  It is available to you either at your local library at no cost, or by paid subscription. (1 hour)

Analyzing Stock Mutual Funds. Whether investing on your own or in a company sponsored retirement plan you need to know what to look for in mutual funds.  We will lead you through the BetterInvesting Mutual Fund Education and Resource Center, which includes BetterInvesting's mutual fund analysis tools and Standard & Poor's data on over 14,000 mutual funds. (2 hour)

Learn the Quick Analysis Tool for Stock Evaluation.  Learn a quick and easy method for evaluating stock quality using Valueline information.  This technique can be done to screen for stocks you want to evaluate more fully with the BetterInvesting Stock Selection Guide.  (1 hour)

Favorite Online Resources for Stock Research. Learn where to find useful stock information on the Internet, including a behind the scenes tour of the BetterInvesting website.  (1 hour)
